September’s Rhapsody in Blue

A maiden born when autumn leaves

Are rustling in September’s breeze,

A Sapphire on her brow should bind;

To bring her joy and peace of mind.

Its beauty, its magnificent colors and its sophistication are qualities associated with the sapphire, the official gemstone of those born in September. The sapphire is said to bring mental clarity and hope to its wearer. It certainly brings joy on a 45th wedding anniversary. It’s the traditional gemstone on such an auspicious date.

Ancient peoples believed that the firmament was an enormous blue sapphire in which the Earth was embedded and the sapphire was the origin of the heavenly blue skies. While most commonly found in all shades of blue shades, sapphires are formed from the mineral corundum and other trace elements, resulting in sapphires of almost every color of the spectrum.

Today, Oscar Heyman finds some of our finest sapphires in exotic locations such as Kashmir, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Madagascar.
